Charlotte Baker Memorial Jewish Book Month

Join us for an exciting luncheon at the Schmidt Administration Building on November 10th at 11:00a.m. or at our Wine, Cheese & Dessert Reception at the Heron Lakes Family Center on November 19th at 7:00p.m.

Our Thursday luncheon will feature Ilene "Gingy" Beckerman as she is sure to captivate you with The Smartest Woman I Know—Ilene's fifth illustrated treasure— a tribute to the insightful woman who raised her.

It’s been said there’s nobody as smart as an old woman. That’s Gingy’s grandmother, Ettie, though she had no more than a third-grade education. She dispensed unforgettable wisdom to Gingy and her sister, Tootsie, as well as to the customers at her and (her husband) Mr. Goldberg’s stationery and magazine store, where customers ranged from Irish nannies to Sara Delano Roosevelt to Marlene Dietrich. Clever about life and love, food and men, Ettie had advice for everyone, and it didn’t hurt that she got some of her best ideas from talking things over with God, out loud.

Our Saturday evening event will feature Brandy Cohen as she will entertain us with excerpts from her very popular book "The Perfect Recipe".  Her book is a delightful, fast-paced novel about self-discovery, family relationships and crazy, hot love.  You'll not only enjoy Brandy's perfect recipe but you'll also be delighted with the JCC's wine, cheese and dessert festival.

Call the Soref JCC at (954) 792-6700 for reservations.

Donald Graw, JCC Executive Director, noted enthusiastically "the newly owned building provides our JCC with significant growth opportunity at our main Plantation campus.  We're excited about the many growth possibilities that will help us serve our community better".

On Sunday April 25, 2010 the Soref Jewish Community Center will honor David W. Singer, Esq. at our Humanitarian of the Year Event to be held at 6:00 pm at the Signature Grand in Davie. Proceeds from the event will support our WECARE Food Pantry dedicated to distributing food to local Broward residents in need. This program provides assistance to all regardless of race, religion, or ethnicity.

David Singer has a long esteemed career dedicated to helping those in need. David has been on the Board of the American Cancer Society, in Broward, for 18 years. He also serves on the Florida Division Board of the American Cancer Society and has been a member of the Executive Board of the American Cancer Society for 7 years. For 16 years, he chaired one of their largest fund raising events in Broward County, Jail & Bail, raising $1.8 million dollars.

David was a founding Board Member of the Hollywood Professional Lions Club National Organization, devoted to improving the quality of eye care. He has served lengthy terms on the Boards of premier non-profit organizations including ARMDI, Jewish Federation of Broward County and the Jewish National Fund. David has been on the Board of the Hollywood Chamber for over 20 years and has been Vice President and Treasurer of the organization. For 7 years, he has been on the Board of Governors at Nova Southeastern University Law Center and now sits on the Executive Board.

This is our largest annual fundraiser to support our WECARE Food Pantry program that has helped our Broward neighbors over the past 30 years. This year alone we will provide food for the needy that will provide for over 60,000 meals. Due to high unemployment, there is a dire need to help those less fortunate with the most basic necessity of life.

Especially in today's difficult time your support is more crucial than ever.

 Alvin Gross Preschool "Clowns Around"

January 20, 2010

After two weeks of learning about the circus, our preschoolers at the Alvin Gross Activity Center had a fun packed "Circus Cycling Day." Each room in our school was turned into a different "circus room". Miss Amy became "Miss Polka Dot" as confetti flew , she painted the children's faces and gave each of them a Certificate of Graduation from Clown School! Each child's special clown name was recorded on the certificate as a special memory of the day. Miss Jackie had circus music playing as the student's walked a tightrope, jumped through hoops, and played bear bowling. From there, they visited Miss Effie's room, where they were treated to delicious cotton candy. In Miss Tara and Miss Suellen's room, special art projects awaited and the children were thrilled to complete their own masterpieces. The clown hats and cotton candy were a lot of fun to make! In the last room, we were pleased to meet "Ella the Elegant Elephant" in a story by Steve and Carmela D'amico. Our circus day was a big hit and the children really enjoyed turning our school into a real 'three-ring circus'!

How Does Our Garden Grow?

January 4, 2010

The Brodzki Family Early Childhood Program is truly fortunate to have not only adorable children but wonderful, giving and very creative parents. One of our new moms , Kamilah Hollis, whose son Naresh is one of our PreK scholars, has undertaken a beautiful, organic gardening program with all of our classes! Kamilah traveled all over obtaining the materials and seeds to plant vegetables and flowers in a special, grassy section on the south side of the preschool building. She engaged each class in preparing the soil and planting the seeds in their own special garden area. It was, and continues to be, a great, developmentally appropriate learning experience for all of our children and now we have our first string beans!

We are so grateful to Kamilah for her commitment and for teaching our children such great lessons!

Brodzki Early Childhood Center "Slides" into New Year in Style!

December 30, 2009

The children of the Brodzki Family Early Childhood Program will be in for an amazing and delightful surprise when they return to school on Monday January 4th! With a very generous grant from the Perlman Foundation and a series of fundraising activities in school, the funds were raised to build wonderful new additions to the Early Childhood Playground!

Enter our hero---Marisa Schmidt, a creative, fabulous , loving mother in the preschool who undertook the new playground as her mission in the Fall of 2009! After meeting with numerous contractors, playground equipment companies, etc., Marisa brought this dream to fruition. She arranged for concrete removal, brand new sand, relocation of existing equipment and the installation of 2 magnificent pieces of equipment! Although this is not the end of the wonderful upgrades, it is a remarkable accomplishment already being thoroughly enjoyed by the children at Winter Camp!

We salute our incredible Marisa and are so appreciative of everyone who has helped with the fundraisers that made this possible! Our 3 Family Committee Chairpersons Kara Boehly, Preeti Kolinkarai and Ariana Taylor have also contributed greatly to our fundraising success that made this happen!

Helping the Hungry to the "Max"

November 11, 2009

When Max Brenner - age 12 -  came to the WECARE food pantry with his temple, Dor Dorim, he knew immediately that he wanted to choose WECARE for his mitzvah project for his bar mitzvah. Max sent emails and reminders out to all his friends, family, neighbors and parents' co-workers asking for donations. In less than 2 weeks, Max was able to collect over $1500 in food and cash donations, and today he and his friends and family delivered everything to WECARE. They spent several hours sorting, packing and stacking . Max attends Falcon Cove Middle School in Weston. When asked why he chose this as his mitzvah project, Max smiled and said, "I love food and want everyone to have food to eat!" Many thanks to Max, his family and friends!

Brodzki EC Preschoolers Make Challah for the New Year

September 17, 2009

The children of the Brodzki Family Early Childhood Program are very fortunate to have Jacob and Shayna Schmidt in the PreSchool Family this year. Mommy Marissa made arrangements with Natanya Gourmet Foods to donate the dough so that the children could make their own individual Challahs for Rosh Hashona. With the help of Mommy Stefanie Aurich and Marissa Schmidt's brother David and friends, all of the children kneaded and shaped the dough and had a wonderful, developmentally appropriate learning adventure! Marissa took the challahs back to Natanya where they graciously baked them so the children could each take home their delicious work to share for the Holidays with their families! What a great start for a Sweet New Year! Click HERE to see more pictures of our preschoolers making Challah!

It's an emotional day and we try to comfort both of them," said Judy Kissel, Director of the Brodzki Early Childhood Center.

Once the bell rings at the end of the school day, our Elementary Department swings into gear. Having made it through the first day of school, students participate in our fun-filled Aftercare programs.

Pre-school families in crisis are helped by Federation's program-based allocation

Reprint from Jewish Federation of Broward County e-newsletter dated February 17, 2009

Soref JCC pre-school children making matzos

The continuing crisis in our economy is affecting many Americans, young and old, but one group surely feeling its shockwaves are young families, especially single parent families. And in Broward County, many of those Jewish parents, as we are now discovering, can no longer afford Jewish pre-school care for their children.

The Jewish Federation of Broward County, aware of a growing community need, has therefore once again allocated much-needed funding to the Samuel M. & Helene Soref JCC in Plantation for a program at the JCC that is geared, specifically, toward those pre-school families truly in financial need. The funding is also part of the Federation's overall response to "dire needs" in the community.

By late August of 2008, the Federation began collecting information from its beneficiary agencies, synagogues, and other community organizations as to the sheer numbers of people who were in need of some type of assistance, be it food, clothing, shelter, or straight financial aid. Furthermore, the Federation took on the role of identifying daycare needs of families wishing to have their children stay in Jewish daycare facilities.

Donald Graw, executive director of the Soref JCC, said that while there are still 410 children in the JCC's three pre-schools (one in Plantation and two in Coral Springs), that total is in fact down 10 percent from last year. Graw is hardly surprised. "With the economic challenges we currently face, we're seeing more and more families having a challenging time of paying the tuition for pre-school care," he said. But while the total number of children enrolled is down from last year, Graw emphasized that the number of financial scholarships has actually gone up. "Our JCC currently provides $34,000 per month for children's scholarships," Graw said. "We expect this year's total expenses to exceed $325,000 - and this compares to $278,000 during last year."

Graw lauded the efforts of the Federation during a growing crisis. "The Federation, in general, has been absolutely phenomenal in helping us support our community," Graw said, noting that "40 percent of the total allocations from Federation to our JCC support our three pre-schools." "In light of the economic times we face today," Graw added, "we feel that this generous allocation to our pre-schools has become more important than ever before."

Additionally, the Federation provided another $30,000 in Dire Needs funding for subsidized childcare for working families through six synagogues and the Posnack Jewish Community Center in response to the economic recession.

Perlman Campus Aquatics Complex Bubbles with Excitement

March 5, 2009
A new shadeport has been installed adjacent to the locker rooms with a full universal gym. John Leonard, Director of SwimAmerica, donated the universal gym that is available for everyone to use. The gym equipment is top of the line grade and has been used extensively by the David Posnack Hebrew Day School swim team, along with many others that participate in daily swim instruction. This new addition, combined with the newly renovated locker rooms, racing platforms, pool slide, and outdoor lighting have turned the Aquatics Complex into a first class facility.

Florida State Senator Jeremy Ring and Broward County Vice Mayor Ken Keechl to be Honored by Soref JCC

Reprinted Article from January 9, 2009
The 13th annual Humanitarians of the Year Dinner, the largest Soref JCC fundraising event, will honor both Florida State Senator Jeremy Ring and Broward County Vice Mayor Ken Keechl for their terrific community involvement. This year's event is scheduled for April 26 at the Signature Grand in Davie. Proceeds from the event support the JCC's children's scholarship programs and WECARE Food Pantry. Alan Marks, Event Committee Chairman, said that this year's event is particularly important in light of today's economic climate. Marks was very optimistic about this year's event stating "we've been fortunate over the years to have so many dedicated individuals and corporations support our social service programs and I know they will again shine for our community."

Last year the Soref JCC provided over $275,000 of scholarships to local residents in need so their children could attend JCC preschool, afterschool, or summer camp programs. The WECARE Food Pantry helped over 6,300 local residents in 2008 by providing bags of non-perishable groceries. All JCC social services are provided to Broward County residents regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, age or gender.

Humanitarians of the Year Event Gets $10,000 Anonymous Sponsorship

February 17, 2009
An anonymous Diamond $10,000 sponsorship has generously been provided to the Soref JCC to support both its children's scholarship and WECARE food pantry programs. Alan Marks, Event Committee Chair, noted "this is a terrific way to begin our 2009 Humanitarians of the Year fundraising. We know it's a difficult time for almost everyone which makes it even more vital that we raise needed funds to help our community. Thanks to this most generous donation, many local residents will get the extra help they need."

WECARE Food Pantry Receives $25,000 Grant

February 13, 2009
The local Emergency Food and Shelter Program will provide $25,000 for the WECARE food pantry that represents funds allocated by Congress for fiscal year 2009. This has been a major advocacy issue by the Jewish Federation of Broward County and certainly will provide needed assistance to many hungry people during this most difficult economic time.

WECARE Food Pantry Responds to Growing Needs

February 6, 2009
In light of the very challenging economic time and the ensuing increase in requests for help, the Soref JCC has doubled the size of the WECARE food pantry. This expansion will greatly enable WECARE to distribute food to the ever increasing needs of our local community. Last year alone the WECARE food pantry distibuted food that provided for over 36,000 meals.

Students from the David Posnack Hebrew Day School in Plantation volunteered their efforts on Friday February 6 by painting the newly expanded WECARE facility. Led by Chelsea Gober, 11th and 12th grade students from the National Honor Society spent hours rolling and brushing paint to hasten the move into the new space. Donald Graw, Soref JCC Executive Director, visited the students to thank them for volunteering their time and energy. Students included Josh Gendal, Alexis Gedallovich, Chanel Shabtal, Danielle Hadar, Noa Ghersin, Gabriela Ittah, Sam Kent, Samantha Klazkin, Alex Englander, Maytal Levy, and Lianna Mir.

Local Synagogues Care For WECARE

January 22, 2009
The Soref JCC presented 23 Certificates of Appreciation to local Broward County synagogues for their valuable contributions to our community in 2008. Susan Baigelman, Director of WECARE, expressed deep gratitude from the Soref JCC for the synagogues' outpouring of support that included food drives, donations, and volunteer efforts to support the WECARE food pantry. Susan said "the synagogues represent a broad cross-section of Broward County and greatly enable us to provide food for many of our local Broward residents in need. Without their assistance I can't imagine how we would be able to meet the vast needs, particularly in light of this difficult economy."

"Light the Way to Hanukkah". . .a Shining Event

December 22, 2008
Over 350 people attended yesterday's Hanukkah celebration at the Soref JCC. Children had big smiles on their faces as they played in the bounce houses, slid down the gigantic slide, enjoyed face painting, made arts & crafts, and so much more. Both children and adults were fabulously entertained throughout the afternoon on the center stage in the main plaza. Bobby the Balloon Guy got things going by miraculously engulfing his entire body in a balloon. Vanishing Species wowed the audience with lots of exciting animals. The Jimmy Jam Cloggers, who practice weekly at the JCC, performed high energy dance routines that captivated all. Miss Tracy led the children in a Hanukkah sing-a-long series and paraded them across the plaza with musical instruments. At the completion of all this wonderful entertainment, Rabbi Bater from Temple Beth Israel led everyone in the menorah lighting ceremony.

Inside the gym there were magnificent vendor boutique displays and terrific exhibits from the Jewish Federation of Broward County, Channel 2, and the Soref JCC. Of course there was great food including barbequed hot dogs, hamburgers, falafel, and latkes. To the delight of Dolfans, the Miami Dolphins game was broadcast on the big screen. Check out all the great pictures from the event HERE. Click here to view the video.

"North" Breeze Flows Thru Brodzki Preschool

November 12, 2008
We had a wonderful treat for the preschool children when author Sherry North visited today as part of our annual Jewish Book Month program. She delighted the children as she read her book aloud "Because You Are My Baby", played games, and interacted with the children.

The book is a delightful, beautifully illustrated playful story that helps children learn about the different "jobs" and professions they can be when they grow up.

Sherry is the daughter of Shoshana Ehrlich, one of the Soref JCC board members.

Our next Jewish Book Month event is Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 11:00am in the Founders Room upstairs in the Schmidt Administration Building on the Perlman Family Campus. Cost is $25 per person and includes lunch or $30 for lunch and 2 raffle tickets. Victoria Zackheim, editor of "For Keeps: Women tell the Truth about their Bodies, Growing Older, and Acceptance" will entertain us with stories.
