Soref JCC Ends Year on a High
Jewish Book Month and Golf Classic Raises Money for Scholarships and Food Pantry Programs
Published Monday, December 28, 2015

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—It’s been a successful last two months of the year for the Soref Jewish Community Center (JCC). The Soref JCC has raised nearly $15,000 in their last two events of the year, the Charlotte Baker Memorial Jewish Book Month in November and the Love ‘Fore’ the Kids Golf Classic in December. Both events’ proceeds go directly to the Children’s Scholarship Program and the JCC’s WECARE Food Pantry.

The Charlotte Baker Memorial Jewish Book Month featured two events:  a luncheon with author Barbara Weitzner, whose book Choices features a collection of short stories about the vanishing innocence of a young girl and a wine and cheese evening with author and Holocaust survivor Irene Weisberg-Zisblatt. Weisberg-Zisblatt’s book, The Fifth Diamond, is an autobiography about her time as a prisoner in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Her story was also featured in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning documentary, The Last Days.

Love ‘Fore’ the Kids Golf Classic is an annual event at Woodmont Country Club. Now in its 24th year, the Classic highlights the participants’ competitive nature and includes closest to the pin challenges and best overall team.

“We host these events every year and it’s always amazing to see such an outpouring from the community,” said Soref JCC Executive Director Donald Graw. “We are thankful to the participants, donors and sponsors who help us raise money for these important programs.”

The Soref JCC’s Children’s Scholarship Program enables children from less fortunate families to attend high quality preschool, afterschool and summer camp programs.  Since the inception of the JCC in 1977, over $7 million of scholarship assistance and this year alone expects to provide approximately $500,000 of scholarship support to those in need.  Over 90 percent of the scholarships assist families with preschool daycare and summer camp, which is vital for parents being able to work.  Most of the preschool families have young parents who are at the early stage of their economic development and are in desperate need of financial assistance to afford high quality daycare.  The Soref JCC not only provides high quality daycare but also provides children with a strong foundation to understand their Jewish heritage.

WECARE Food Pantry distributes free non-perishable food to all Broward residents in need.  Most of the clients are referred to WECARE from premier social service agencies including Women in Distress, Broward County School District, Henderson Behavioral Health, Archways, Jewish Family Service of Broward, Gulf Coast, Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies, and numerous others.  Vital financial support for WECARE include: The Jewish Federation of Broward County, United Way of Broward County, Walmart, Publix Supermarket Charities and the Emergency Food & Shelter Program.

Since 2014, $8 billion across-the-board farm bill reduction in SNAP benefits (aka food stamps), the WECARE food pantry has experienced almost a 20 percent increase in clients served.  While the nationwide employment outlook has improved somewhat in recent years, food banks around the country are reporting soaring levels of food insecurity and demand for emergency food assistance.

The Soref JCC is currently planning its Humanitarian of the Year dinner. The event will take place in April and will benefit both the scholarship and food pantry programs.
