The Soref JCC named its Jewish Book Month event(s) in honor of Charlotte Baker.  Charlotte was an ardent supporter of the Soref JCC and particularly in celebrating Jewish Book Month.  She was a long-time Soref JCC board member and worked tirelessly to bring many wonderful Jewish Book Month events to our community.  Charlotte had a special passion for supporting the WECARE Food Pantry and was always cognizant of procuring food and toiletries to help those in need.

The Soref JCC is proud to present an interactive virtual community event Dancing on Glass by award winning playwright Gary Morgenstein, as the 2024 Charlotte Baker Memorial Jewish Book Month presentation. This extremely timely and relevant piece takes place in Brooklyn and deals with two broken families in an explosive public case of antisemitism, political bullying, and the perils of parenting, when a Jewish teacher of Israeli-Palestinian studies is fired for not being “balanced enough".

The plays and novels of the award-winning writer Gary Morgenstein (Creator-Book Writer) have been featured in national media from the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Parade Magazine, the New York Post, and Sports Illustrated, to NPR. Morgenstein’s stage dramas include A Black and White Cookie, the Broadway World award-winning drama about the unlikely friendship between an African American newsstand owner and an eccentric Communist Jew. His Perry Award-winning (Best Original Play) poignant drama A Tomato Can’t Grow in the Bronx is about a Jewish working-class family in the tumultuous 1960s.
